World Environment Day Programme, 2016 was celebrated by the Department in an auspicious manner by organising a one day seminar at IWDMK, Chadayamangalam on 05.06.2016. The observance was intended  to create awareness among students and public about the importance of protecting the environment and conserving the valuable natural resources.

Honourable M.L.A. Sri. Mullakara Ratnakaran inaugurated the function, which was presided over by Smt. K. Jagadamma, District Panchayat President, Kollam. in the mist of around  150 participants namely  students from various schools, colleges and teachers, government officials and public .

The activities organized in connection with the  celebration of World Environment Day 2016 are

Painting competition for school students

Painting competitions were conducted for LP, UP and HS levels separately on different topics related to environment conservation. Sixteen students from LP section, 11 from UP section and 11 from HS section participated in the competition. Paintings on ‘environment’ were mind capturing. Prizes for the top three students in each category were awarded in the function.

WED Exhibition -‘Bhoomipooja- Prakruthikkoru unarthupattu

An elaborate photo and poster exhibition was conducted based on the focal theme of WED 2016 ‘Join the race to make the world a better place’ displaying the importance of conserving nature. Models were also displayed in watershed museum elaborating the importance of conservation of natural resources.

The exhibits gave a detailed insight on global warming and climate change and motivated the visitors for eco restoration.

Seminar on ‘Protect your environment’

Seminar on ‘Protect your environment was handled by eminent personalities in this field. Session on ‘environment regeneration and biodiversity’ was handled by Dr. Biju Damodaran (Film Director, national award winner for best film in 2014 and national award winner for best documentary on environment conservation in 2016). Sri. Mullakara Ratnakaran, M.L.A. and Sri. J. Justin Mohan I.F.S. also delivered motivational addresses in the seminar. The role of students in environment conservation was stressed by all speakers. All the sessions of the programme conveyed the potential threats faced by our environment and called for urgent and whole hearted efforts for environment regeneration. 

Release of special postage stamp

The program also included the release of a special postage stamp to commemorate the observance of WED 2016 at IWDM-K, Chadayamangalam by Sri. Mullakara Ratnakaran, M.L.A. The postal stamp was received by Smt. K. Jagadamma, District Panchayat President, Kollam.  

Distribution of seedlings

About 1500 seedlings of neem, amla, curry leaf, sandal, red sandal, sitaphal, lakshmitharu, brinjal etc. were distributed to the participating schools and eco-clubs to underline the importance of environment conservation in students and public. It was also decided to carry out the follow up action in this regard by collecting reports from the schools by March, 2017 and give away awards for the best performing school as ‘Harithavidyalaya’ during WED observance, 2017.

Planting trees

Ten tree saplings were planted by the dignitaries who have attended the World  Environment Day, 2016 celebrations, in the IWDM-K campus as a token of disseminating our mission of protecting and caring for the environment. Local and native tree species suited to the agro-climate were planted. It also conveys the strong message to mankind that trees are the only practical solution to fight global warming and climate change.

Documentary show

Video documentary shows on ‘Year - 2070’ and ‘Urava thedunna Mannu’ which visualizes the urgent need for environment protection were also included in the programme to motivate the student community towards nature conservation. These video shows provided a deep insight for the students into the hazards faced by the environment and various methods to protect it.
