As part of the World Soil Day celebrations, the Department of Soil Survey and Soil Conservation organized essay and painting competitions for school children at PWD rest House, Thycaud, Trivandrum on 19/11/2016.

World Soil Day is celebrated every year on 5th December under the aegis of the United Nations across the world to create awareness among the people on the importance of protecting the soil for sustainable development and for our posterity.

Soils play a crucial role in agricultural production and productivity and for the survival of life on earth. It takes about 1000 years for the formation of one inch of soil and it is vital for protecting the valuable soils for our own future. The Department of Soil Survey and Soil Conservation which is mandated to protect the soils of Kerala undertakes a variety of activities for preserving the soil diversity of the state. The department publishes Soil Survey reports at the Panchayat and watershed level, distributes soil health cards to farmers, undertakes soil and water conservation activities on a watershed approach, provides basic infrastructure to the farmers to protect the soil and water resources of their farm and provides assured irrigation during the lean season. The Soil Museum at Trivandrum provides a repository of information on the Soils of the State. The department also undertakes consultancy works and offers training on watershed management, plantation management, GIS and Remote Sensing, details of which are available in the department website.

The state level Soil Day celebrations would be formally inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan on 5th December 2016 at Kanakakunnu Palace at 1030 AM. The function would be presided by the Hon'ble Agriculture Minister Adv. V.S.Sunil Kumar and would be attended by a host of dignitaries. The prizes for the winners of the essay and painting competition would be distributed during the function.
