CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD SOIL DAY ON 5th DECEMBER 2016
The State Soil Survey and Soil Conservation Department has celebrated the World Soil Day on 5th December 2016 by undertaking a massive campaign to create awareness among the public on the importance of protecting soils. The World Soil Day celebrations an initiative of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation aims to connect the people with soil and to impart awareness in our daily life and survival. The day coincides with the birthday of Mr. Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand who strived to raise global awareness on soils.
The State level inauguration of World Soil Day celebrations 2016 was held at Kanakakunnu palace on 5th December at 10.30a.m. Sri. J. Justin Mohan, Director of Soil Survey and Soil Conservation welcomed the gathering. The Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture Adv. V. S. Sunil Kumar inaugurated the soil day celebration. In his inaugural address, the Hon’ble Minister highlighted the present scenario of drastic climatic change and the preceding severe drought both in irrigation and agriculture sector faced by the state. He stressed the need for soil and water conservation measures and vital role of the Dept. of Soil Survey and Soil Conservation in alleviating the problems. He added that the Department has to lead lead role in the recently launched prestigious Haritha Kerala mission activities in conservation of the natural resources, soil and water which form the basis for agriculture.
The function was presided by Hon.’ble MLA Sri. K. Muraleedharan and was graced by the presence of Hon. Mayor Sri. V. K. Prasanth, Vice Chairman Planning Board Sri. V. K. Ramachandran, ward councilor Sri. Palayam Rajan, Agricultural Production Commissioner Shri. Raju Narayanaswamy, Director of Agriculture, Sri. Biju Prabhakar, Director of Environment and Climate Change, Smt. Padma Mohanti, Land Use Commissioner, Sri. A. Nizamuddin, KERAFED Managing Director, Sri. M. A. Francis, KAICO Managing Director Sri. P. Suresh Babu. The Hon’ble Mayor delivered the World Soil Day pledge on the event. The Vice Chairman Planning Board Sri. V. K. Ramachandran delivered the keynote address and the Agricultural Production Commissioner Shri. Raju Narayanaswamy delivered the special address on the occasion.
During the inaugural program, Soil and Land Resources Reports of five panchayats viz, Mangalapuram in Thiruvananthapuram district, Pooyapally in Kollam district, Mannar in Alappuzha district, Aimanam in Kottayam district and Mookkannur panchayat in Ernakulam district twenty watersheds falling under Ernakulam and Idukki districts and were released. A special postage stamp to commemorate the event was released in collaboration with the Department of Posts on the occasion. Soil Health Cards were distributed to selected farmers to mark the event. The state has prepared one lakh soil health cards under the Central Soil Health Card Scheme and by March 2018, it is expected that all farmers of the state would be covered under the scheme. Prizes were distributed to students who won the painting and essay competition conducted as part of the celebrations. Sri. Anil M Joseph, Deputy Director (Soil Survey), proposed the vote of thanks. Farmers, students, scientists, officials from line departments attended the program.
Seminars for farmers on Soil Health Management for Sustainable Agricultural Development and Clmatic Change & natural Resource Conservation were also conducted as part of the program.
